Thick layers of fresh snow Appear overnight, flopping Onto unsuspecting cars And freshly plowed roads. Road signs stand with blindfolds Of mischievous, slushy snow, Clinging and chuckling, Making all roads equal In their anonymity. Windows are free of ice On the outside, but someohw Laced with stubborn, unreachable Paper thing ice on the inside.

I like to drive On deserted back roads that are cracked And frayed at the edges, Like the pages of a beloved book. Roads that are so old that time and nature Have ground them back into the earth, Breaking them down in places, Reducing them Back to their basic components, undoing What man has [...]
